On Tuesday, July 11, over 350 professionals from specialty pharmacies and surrounding industries converged virtually for a webinar to help them better understand how to apply the changes that were made to the patient management standards when URAC released Specialty Pharmacy v3.0 Accreditation in 2015. Here is a recap of the event and the results to the poll questions that were asked during the webinar.

Hosted by Therigy and Cleveland Clinic, the event was presented by industry experts Russ Allinson and Pam DeVaul with Therigy, as well as special guest Chase Dye with Cleveland Clinic.

Why a Webinar on Accreditation?

Accreditation has become an important step for specialty pharmacies to stay competitive and earn contracts with big pharma and payers.

The accreditation process itself helps specialty pharmacies improve their processes to meet the demands of today’s value-based reimbursement environment. But accreditation is not an easy process to go through. Preparing in advance can help specialty pharmacies avoid potential major hurdles.

The accreditation process can be challenging for specialty pharmacies as they look to:

  • Ensure mandatory document control
  • Create new policies and processes
  • Add resources
  • Encourage a culture of top-down leadership support
  • Coordinate across teams
  • Commit significant time

Allinson, co-founder, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Clinical Officer with Therigy, and his colleagues presented knowledge about how to use tools, technologies, and lessons learned to effectively, efficiently, and thoroughly work through the accreditation process.

Allinson specifically talked about the changes that have occurred in the Specialty Drug Management (SDrM) and Patient Management (PM) standards, as well as how to utilize technology to meet accreditation requirements.

For example, when Allison discussed PM 8 (Coordination of Care), he shared that care plans must be documented in a central location and include:

  • A statement of problem needs
  • Strategies to meet the needs
  • Measureable goals based upon the needs
  • A timeframe to meet each goal
  • Resources available
  • Desires/motivations of the patient

Also relating to care plans, Allinson noted that three care plans need to be presented for review for URAC’s onsite visit.

Regarding how technology can assist in meeting accreditation requirements, Allinson pointed out that it helps:

  • Organize workflow
  • Automate evidence-based care plans
  • Document and report clinical interventions

Dye, who is the Specialty and Mail Order Pharmacy Operations Manager for Cleveland Clinic, presented a case study on how his hospital system navigated the accreditation process.

Dye discussed the obstacles of delivering specialty pharmacy care and the solutions they’ve come up with at Cleveland Clinic. These solutions include electronic links, a single point-of-contact, and new opportunities for value.

Dye provided specific pointers that others can utilize, including defining expectations, preparing and auditing materials in advance, and developing agendas and checklists.

DeVaul, who is Therigy’s Vice President of Quality, provided additional tips for successfully completing the accreditation process, such as creating project plans, identifying gaps, setting deadlines, and creating interview questions.

Types of Specialty Pharmacies

We asked: What types of specialty pharmacies do we have in the audience?

More than 50% of respondents were from health systems, and nearly a quarter represented independent specialty pharmacies. The remaining respondents were from a combination of retail/chain, payer-owned, infusion, and physician-practice specialty pharmacies.

Technology Use

Attendees answered a second poll question: What technology are you using today to help with patient management?

The majority of respondents—40%—are using therapy management software, and nearly a fourth rely on electronic medical records. The remaining respondents indicated that they’re using a specialty pharmacy workflow platform; Outlook, Excel, and Access; dispensing software; or, manual paper systems.
